ADOG that almost died, after being abandoned near a motorway in West Lancashire, has now been rehomed.

The smooth-coated St Bernard was found in March, after running loose near the M58 for almost a month.

The dog, named Beauty, was caught as a result of a joint effort from residents and police, after receiving reports that she had been sighted around Bickerstaffe, in Skelmersdale, and had been roaming the fields by the motorway.

Fortunately, the brown and white dog was safely captured and received the care she needed.

She was sent to Carla Lane Animals in Need, in Liverpool, for treatment and was reported to be “in extremely poor health” upon arrival.

A spokesperson for the animal charity said: “(She had been) having to fend for herself, living without regular access to food or water, exposed to such dreadful weather for so long that we suspect she may not have had very long left, had she not been caught safely.

“This poor soul has had to draw upon every reserve her body had just to stay alive.”

When Beauty was captured, she was about a quarter of what would be considered a healthy weight for her breed and size, giving the charity grave cause for concern.

However, Beauty has since made a full recovery, has gained enough to be considered a healthy weight and has been rehomed with one of the people who helped to capture her. The St Bernard has now settled into her new home in Liverpool.

She shares the house with two other dogs, both border terriers, which she gets on well with and enjoys being around.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “The lovely St Bernard dog that everyone was so concerned about after she was abandoned out in the cold has been re-homed... Good luck.”
