FROM the Beeston Review, w/e April 27 CATTLE Forward cattle rang the bell on several occasions today, the second draft consignmen­t from Geoff Newsome topping the trade at £1,205 for both Angus and Blue x steers, Phil Tushingham sold Angus steers to £1,200 and Andrew Williamson to £1,195 for Limx. Countless steers over £1,000 including 13mo superstars from Brian Hassall to £1,050 and 16mo Blues from Ben Starkey to £1,040. Great summering type steers from Roger Dutton, just 11mo, made a terrific 262p/kg. POULTRY Top price was £40 for some Muscovy ducks, up more than £22 on the week. Some in-lay bronze turkeys sold well for £28 from M Belgrau. Plenty of demand for cockerels as usual with a cracking large Faverolle cock selling for £19 from F C & B Millward. A lovely trio of Golden Silkies from IF Lloyd sold for £19 with plenty of buyers not starting. Ducks sold very well, with four unsexed ducklings sold for £15. Some legbar pullets sold for £11 with demand for more. PIGS A complete shock, after last week’s super trade, to see so few in, leaving buyers well short of requiremen­ts. Today’s entry peaked at 140p/kg for 85kg gilts from Messrs Ellis, with pigs grossing up to £120.65 per head. Porkers to 140p/kg, av 121.28p/ kg, cutters to 130p/kg, av 114.55p/kg. SHEEP Another terrific trade on new season lambs, and very strong demand for old season despite reports of lower prices elsewhere, and cull ewes much more fun to sell with a lot more top quality meated ewes in. Sunshine and fresh grass brought out plenty of eager customers for an excellent entry of ewes and lambs, all selling to terrific prices. New season lambs overall average 318.4p/kg, old season lambs overall average 235.2p/kg EGGS Dozen of call duck eggs sold for £7 followed by Millefleur Pekin bantams selling to £6. Quality eggs in keen demand with more required each week. PRODUCE 100% clearance with only three loads of straw on offer. Trade good with an 11-tonne load of barley straw realising £152 per tonne. A nine-tonne load of oat straw at £150, and a 22-tonne load £143.
