Golfers’ £11,000 gift for charity
GOLFERS from Southport’s Hillside Golf Club have raised £11,000 to support life-saving cancer research after a year-long fundraising drive.
The club selected North West Cancer Research, as its charity of the year and has spent the past 12 months organising a calendar of events and campaigns to raise as much money as possible for the charity.
Events included raffles, auctions and “Charity Bunkers” where players donate £1 if they land in the 18th hole.
A fundraising highlight was the club’s Charity Golf Day in August which pitted two teams – the Reds and the Blues against PONTVILLE School in Ormskirk has won SEN School/Group of the Year Award at a ceremony in London for its continued commitment to developing its pupils’ communication skills.
The 2018 Shine a Light Awards were hosted by stand-up comedian, actor and writer, Adam Hess.
The national awards scheme celebrates innovative work and excellent practice in supporting children and each other in a 18-hole tournament which contributed £7,000 towards the final total.
Barclaycard also helped to boost the club’s efforts and its match funding helped take the donation to £11,000.
Dave Rooney, captain of Hillside Golf Club men’s team, said: “We heard about the charity through one of our members and were impressed with the research they support across Merseyside and the North West.
“Cancer, sadly, has touched many of our members in one way or another over the last few years and it’s great to know the money we raise, will support research which will benefit people on our doorstep.” young people’s communication development.
Pontville School says that communication underpins everything, from the first 12 weeks of a pupil’s journey, when detailed assessments are made, to their very last day at the school.
Bespoke approaches to speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) include a siblings group, home communication programmes, and parent/ pupil target reviews.

“This award recognises the fantastic teamwork and expertise of our education, clinical and care staff who demonstrate great dedication and their expertise ensures that students thrive and flourish.
“Speech and language is embedded throughout every element of the school and we ensure that the needs of our children and young people are at the heart of our work.
“Our pupils, staff and families have been rooting for us to win, so we are thrilled!”
The Shine a Light Awards have grown in popularity since their launch during the National Year of Communication in 2011.
