POLICE have released a CCTV picture of a man they want to speak to after a 71 year-old street pastor was knocked unconscious after intervening in an “altercation” in Ormskirk town centre.

The pensioner was punched in the face when she attempted to calm the situation between two groups of men who were arguing and throwing bricks at each other.

The blow caused her to fall to the floor, knocking her out.

At the time of the incident, police said that the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance, but had since recovered. A 50 year-old man was also hit by a black Audi during the fracas. The driver made off from the area.

The incident took place between 10.50pm and 11pm on Saturday, June 16, on the Wheatsheaf car park, off Railway Road.

Officers investigating the incident have now released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the attack on the woman, as they believe he could assist with inquiries.

Det Con Michael Feeley, from West Lancashire CID, said: “It is utterly disgusting to think that an elderly woman, just acting as a pacifist, was punched so hard she landed on the pavement and was knocked unconscious. We are investigating the full circumstances around the altercation between the groups, the woman being attacked and the man being hit by the car.

“If you recognise the man pictured or you have any information that could assist without inquiries, please make contact with us.”

Ormskirk police can be contacted via 01695 566166 or, if you fail to get an answer, call 101 quoting incident reference 1669 of June 16.

Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or online at crimestoppers-uk. org.
