Building a picture of local life in the past

- BY ANDREW BROWN andrew.brownNW@trinitymirror.com @visandrewbrown

TODAY we launch our new column, looking back at old pictures of West Lancashire through the years.

And we’d love you to help us bring local history to life – please share your memories on any of these images, or why not send us your pictures and stories of life in areas such as Ormskirk, Burscough, Skelmersdale, Rufford, Parbold, Hesketh Bank, Tarleton and Scarisbrick in years gone by?

Today we feature two great photos from the Ormskirk Advertiser from a fayre at Rufford Old Hall in May, 1983, with some very fine historical outfits on show.

The bran tub dip was only 15p to enter!

Are you one of the people pictured? Do you remember visiting Rufford Old Hall in the 1980s?

We also feature two pictures of buildings in the 1980s which were in serious need of renovation.

One image shows a crane at work at a large site by the canal at Parbold – do you remember what this building was, and do you know what replaced it?

Another image shows 29A Burscough Street in Ormskirk town centre, which was due to be redeveloped by Ormskirk Civic Trust. What happened to it?

Our final photo shows hovercraft racing at Leisure Lakes in Mere Brow on May 1983.

Do you remember taking part, or watching the races?
