AMUM was left horrified after claiming she found a nail in a tub of formula milk meant for her eightmonth-old baby.

Rebecca Illingworth, 28, was making up bottles for her baby, Emily, when she said she was pricked on her finger by a nail as she went to scoop out the SMA follow-on milk.

The mum-of-two said she was stunned as she pulled the rusty nail out of the milk powder – and immediately called her friend, who also used the product, to warn her off it.

Rebecca said: “I used SMA with my first child Max and I know my mum used it with me, so it’s a brand I really trust.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found the nail; I felt something prick me as I went to scoop out the powder and I’m so glad I did.

“It could have been so much worse if I didn’t find it and it had gone into Emily’s bottle.

“As soon as I found it I called my friend and my brother as they both use the same product, to warn them off using it.”

Rebecca said immediately after finding the nail, she contacted SMA about the product she had bought from the Asda supermarket at Central 12, in Southport.

The company offered to send her vouchers and vowed to investigate the incident, but Rebecca, from Southport, said nothing would persuade her to use the product again.

She said: “It was just disgusting, the nail was big and looked like it had been used, it had black marks on it and was dirty.

“I obviously couldn’t use any of the tub and at £8 a tub it’s annoying to not be able to use it – we’re not made of money. When I spoke to the woman from SMA she couldn’t understand why I was so upset.

“It’s not about the vouchers, my daughter could have drunk from a bottle of milk with a nail in it.”

A Nestlé spokesperson said: “We know families rely on our formula milk, so we take any report of contamination in our products extremely seriously.

“We won’t discuss individual cases until our comprehensive and forensic investigations are complete, in this case we are waiting for the tin and foreign object to be sent to us from the consumer.”
