Swords at the ready to mark birthday

-

ORMSKIRK residents will be able to see the Southport Swords Morris and sword dancing troupe as they celebrate their 50th birthday year this weekend.

The Swords are inviting some of their Morris dancing friends from around the country to join them for displays around the local area.

Ian Ellis, from the Southport Swords, said: “We will be dancing Saturday morning firstly in Ormskirk centre approximately 9.45am, then two tours to Formby village and Crosby Another Place (Iron Men) alternating after lunch to the same venues.

“We will be later arriving in Southport at appoximately 3.30pm with one tour near the Southport Pier entrance, the other in Chapel Street. We will be finishing with all teams dancing in the Town Gardens, by The Atkinson, on Lord Street, in Southport, at 4.15pm.

“On Sunday, there will dancing in the Botanic Gardens, in Churchtown, from late morning and probably Churchtown Village afterwards.”

The Southport Swords were formed in 1968, primarily to dance English longsword dances, but also Cotswold and rapper.

The Swords are proud to uphold a tradition of long-sword dancing in Lancashire, first recorded in 1712, and are now always pleased to welcome new members.
