Results will come says Lynch

CLUB captain David Lynch reckons it’s only a matter of time before Southport transfer their cup form into the Conference North.

The Sandgrounders defeated Curzon Ashton 2-1 away in the FA Cup third qualifying round last weekend and are now just one game away from reaching the first round proper.

Goals from Dion Charles and Jack Sampson either side of half-time set up a mouth-watering clash with fellow Conference North outfit Ashton United at Haig Avenue on Saturday 20th October.

Lynch, however, reckons the win over Curzon shows consistent form is just around the corner for the strugglers, who sit second bottom after winning one of their opening eleven games this term.

“The start to the season hasn’t been great but it’s not been through lack of hard work or anything like that,” he said.

“It’s just been about finding partnerships and you can see it’s coming together.

“The last 20 minutes when they got the goal they were inevitably going to come onto us a little bit more but we played really well.

“It sets the standard in training. Training has been different class. The tempo and things like that, it was only a matter of time before the results come.”

Southport welcome ninth-place York City to Haig Avenue this Saturday and Lynch reckons it is ‘vital’ to start clambering up the table after a 2-0 defeat to Brackley Town last time out.

“The way the manager demands us training in terms of intensity it is only a matter of time before results start to come,” he added.

“That’s your bread and butter. The manager is drumming that into us all week. We can’t get carried away.

“It’s a win and a good performance but there’s still aspects of our game we can improve on.

“We’ll be doing our homework on them during the week, training will be sharp as always”.
