Students take to streets of New York

-

THIRTY-FOUR students from Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College recently returned from an ‘experience-packed’ six day visit to New York City.

The length and breadth of Manhattan was explored, mostly on foot, by the Skelmersdale-based group, covering an average of 13 miles per day!.

The Year 11 students experienced upper, middle and lower Manhattan on their tour of famous landmarks.

They included: The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge, New York Public Library, Wall Street, Ground Zero, Broadway, Washington Square Arch, 5th Avenue, Confucius Plaza and the Empire State Building.

They also took in Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Plaza, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Time Square, Central Park, the Diamond Quarter at Columbus Circle, Greenwich Village, and the Triumphant Arch and Colonnade.

Also on the tour were the Chrysler Building, Flat Iron Building, Little Italy and Chinatown plus a fun-packed day ice skating in Central Park followed by tea at the Hard Rock Café.

Trip leader Sue Quane said: “It was, once again, a pleasure to be able to take our students on a trip that gives them such a unique and potentially life changing experience.

‘‘We live in an ever-growing competitive and accessible world so trips like this for our students can prove invaluable as they consider and plan their future. Such an experience for a 15/16-year-old could quite easily influence the career path they choose.

“As well as visiting landmarks and seeing the iconic architecture of New York City, the students get to experience the local, diverse culture and immerse themselves into life in the ‘City that Never Sleeps’.

“Our Lady Queen of Peace has offered this trip to Year 11 students for several years now and, once again, the students have been a real credit to their families and to our school as they fully embrace the packed, exhilarating experience of New York.”
