Village tribute to our fallen heroes

THE Centenary of the end of WWI was marked in Bickerstaf­fe by a range of events for the whole community.

Bickerstaf­fe Holy Trinity Church hosted an exhibition of art created by the children of Bickerstaf­fe School along with a Poppy Waterfall and Silent Soldiers to commemorat­e the Fallen.

There was also a display of WWI related local history, alongside a display featuring Lathom Park and the war horses.

On Friday, November 9 there was a WWI themed concert featuring local choirs, singers and other wartime entertainm­ent.

The service on Friday included Bickerstaf­fe Church Choir, Aughton St Michaels’ Choir, Bickerstaf­fe School Choir and input from other members of the congregati­on and local residents.

On Sunday, the church held its Remembranc­e Sunday Service.

The service, led by the Rev Martin Adams, started with the parade from the Parish Field which included people from Bickerstaf­fe’s organisati­ons and ex-service personnel.

At the end the service the wreaths were lain at the Cenotaph.

Following the service, the new commemorat­ive bench near the Cenotaph was blessed.

This bench is to mark the 100 years since the end of the Great War and was funded by Bickerstoc­k music festival. Another, organised by Bickerstaf­fe Parish Council, is on the Parish Field.

The events of the weekend were organised with the help of members of Holy Trinity Church, Bickerstaf­fe Parish Council, The Lathom Park Trust, Bickerstaf­fe C of E School, Bickerstaf­fe Brownies and Guides, Bickerstoc­k and other local organisati­ons and members of the community.
