Winter warms up as Edge Hill in quarters
BUCS Cup action took centre stage in the university sports calendar last week, with Edge Hill sides experiencing mixed fortunes.
Quarter-final places were up for grabs and it was the women’s football team who gained the headlines.
They travelled to an unbeaten Leeds second team, who are top of their table – and came away with a 4-3 success.
Cara Bickett, Annabel Ainscough and Lea Winter (2) were the goal heroes for an Edge Hill side who themselves are going well in their league.
In all EHU teams represented the university in six sports.
In hockey, the men’s firsts went down 3-1 at home to a physical Leeds thirds (Jac Horwood on target for the hosts), while the women’s first (University of York, 6-0) and second teams (Cumbria, 4-3 on pens after a 0-0 draw) suffered defeat on the road.
In table tennis there was joy for the women’s firsts, 5-0 home victors over their UCLAN counterparts.
However, there was revenge for UCLAN in rugby union, who won 56-25 in Ormskirk.
The women’s first and fourth netball teams suffered disappointments on the road – the former at Nottingham Trent (68-16), the latter at Liverpool John Moores (54-23), while there was also double defeat in badminton for the men’s sides – the firsts losing on overall points despite a 4-4 away draw, while the seconds went down 8-0 at home to Newcastle University’s firsts.
Away from the competitive action, Edge Hill recently hosted a Disability Sports Evening (Tuesday, November 20).
Sports Development officer Jenny Winrow led the event alongside the Student’s Union, with the aim of informing and inspiring students about disability sport.
Activities included goalball, boccia and sit-down volleyball and was hailed a huge success, with many students involved.
