Players forced into early bath

- BY NEIL LEATHERBARROW

IT was all going to plan for Paul McNally’s Skelmersdale United side when they visited promotion chasing Colne on Saturday.

They were matching the East Lancashire outfit and thoroughly deserved to be on level terms at 0-0 when the teams went in for half-time.

But then the British weather had its say on everyone’s entertainment by producing a deluge that forced a pitch inspection by the referee and both managers before the second-half could commence.

The match was abandoned reportedly because the ball would no longer roll properly.

Skem manager Paul McNally had introduced two new players, both had been with him previously at Litherland REMYCA, striker Joel Douglas and hugely experienced midfielder Marvin Molyneux, both were in the starting line-up.

Paul also retained youngster Liam Boden in goal after his impressive performance on his debut last week.

Colne had former Skelmersdale Championship winning striker Josh Hine making his debut for them.

Skelmersdale had loud appeals for a penalty that were turned away in the early stages, then Davy Moore put a free-kick over the home crossbar.

Left-winger Brad Lynch was the danger man for Colne making a number of weaving runs at the Skem defence but he was kept at bay.

It had not been the most action packed half of football you will see and it looked good for Skem as they went into the dressing-rooms, then the heavens opened.

Skelmersdale will probably be disappointed with the curtailment of the game, they were looking to have a strong case to bring at least a point home with them. Paul McNally’s changes are working well.
