THE body of a pensioner who left his home in a dressing gown in freezing conditions was found after a search.

Alec Baxter, 81, had last been seen in the Old Hollow Lane area of Banks at about 7am on Wednesday, January 30 and police issued an urgent appeal for help to find him.

The initial public appeal stated: “We are extremely concerned for his welfare as he has left the house wearing a red dressing gown, despite the cold weather.

“Alec is also in receipt of regular medication which he doesn’t have with him.

“He is described as white, around 5ft 11in, of slim build with grey hair. He may have headed towards the nearby marsh at the end of New Lane Pace and Marsh Road.”

A search operation involving Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and a police helicopter was launched in the area around his home.

But Lancashire police later confirmed that a body found on the same day near Old Hollow Lane, near the Ribble Estuary, is believed to be Mr Baxter.

A spokesman said: “Police looking for a missing man have found a body.

“The body has yet to be formally identified but it is sadly believed to be that of Mr Baxter. His family have been notified.

“Our thoughts are with Alec’s family and friends at this extremely sad and difficult time.”
