ABURSCOUGH football club has named a stand in honour of a schoolboy battling a life-limiting condition.

The Alfie Lund stand was unveiled at the Thomas Galvin Sports Ground, the home of community club Burscough Dynamo.

The club, which runs teams from five-year-olds to open age, named the stand in honour of Alfie after the fund set up in his name sponsored the kit of its U11s side.

Alfie has a life limiting disorder and cannot walk or talk, has profound and multiple learning difficulties, and suffers from complex epilepsy.

He also spends frequent spells in hospital with infections which he struggles to fight among many other issues.

The Alfie Lund Fund raises money for specialist equipment to help meet his therapy needs and give him a more comfortable life.

It also works to raise awareness of his condition and help other families in the same situation.

Alfie’s dad, Mark, said “At the start of the season our local team Burscough Dynamo under-11s needed a new kit so The Alfie Lund Fund stepped in and sponsored the boys.

“It was nice to be able to give something back to the community that has always supported us and see Alfie’s logo on their shirts. It is a honour to support the team as all the boys are Alfie’s age, this is the team Alfie might have played for if he’d been able so it seemed quite fitting, if not a little poignant.

“Alfie loves going to watch football at all levels.

“He is one of approximately 35 children in the UK to have the disorder, which is called MECP2 duplication syndrome.

“We were amazed when the club got in touch to say they were building a stand in his honour as a thank you, at the Thomas Galvin sports fields and to help raise awareness as so many families and teams will use the stand on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We went to the opening and Alfie cut the ribbon to officially open the stand.

“Times like this show football means more than 90 minutes.”
