Joy as ‘superb’ United finally taste victory

THERE was an outpouring of joy at Skelmersdale United on Tuesday as the club defeated Kendal Town 1-0.
United had last tasted victory in September’s 2-0 away win over Radcliffe and were 14 points adrift at the bottom of the Evo-Stik West heading into the fixture.
Midfielder Alex Griffiths – who was named player of the month for February – scored the only goal of the game to hand manager Paul McNally his first win since replacing Dave Powell in November.
Speaking online after the fixture, United club secretary and director Dan Roberts wrote: “These lads have worked so hard and tonight they showed big hearts and bags of character and got a deserved victory. Superb every one of them.”
Former AFC Liverpool winger Griffiths had earlier moved to defend his team-mates after last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Glossop North End.
Griffiths refused to point the finger when asked if some were showing a lack of fight in their battle against relegation.
When asked if some stars had given up, he replied: “I can’t say anybody isn’t trying. Everyone is trying. It’s difficult.
“This is my first season at this level and I don’t think anyone else apart from [Terry Smith], who’s injured, and Sean has played at this level.
“I can’t say no-one isn’t trying. It’s one of them where it might look like somebody isn’t putting as much effort in but we are trying.
“We clearly just don’t have the quality and it’s a shame. They’re a good group of lads and we just can’t get a result. We have to keep going to the end of the season and try our best.”
United will be hoping to continue their momentum against Colne on Saturday.
The visitors are challenging for the play-offs and currently sit seventh in the division.
