‘We won’t stand for it – there were no excuses’

Burscough boss says players rightly disappointed after defeat

TERRY Green told his Burscough players he will not accept the performance they turned in against 1874 Northwich last weekend.

Burscough have enjoyed an impressive start to life under Green since the manager replaced Dave Sutton in November.

Linnets, however, suffered just the third league defeat of his tenure on Saturday as they were downed 4-2 by the hosts, who drew level on points with their opponents after the victory.

“There were no excuses,” Green said. “I know their manager quite well and we were talking. We were down to 13 men [in the squad], two subs, usual non-league routine.

“We should have been winning at half-time comfortably. We just never came out for the second-half at all.

“We had a discussion afterwards, no raising of voices, saying the standards I’ve set and Wayne [Housley, assistant manager] has set, we’re not going to stand for it.

“The lads are aware of it. They were disappointed and I expected them to be disappointed. I wanted them to have a bad Saturday night if I’m honest with you.

“I just thought we were just lacking a little bit of heart and desire. 1874 were a little bit better than us in that department in the second-half.”

Green’s side have the opportunity to redeem themselves this weekend as former Burscough boss Dave Powell brings his West Didsbury & Chorlton side to Victoria Park.

Didsbury are desperate for victory as they look to avoid relegation this season. They are currently four points adrift of safety in 19th place.

“You’ve got to be careful,” Green assessed ahead of the clash. “They’re scrapping for their lives. They really are. They lost their forward, Tom Bailey, to Runcorn Linnets, who was their top scorer.

“That must be a blow but they’re scrapping for their lives and I won’t be underestimating them at all.”
