ASCHOOL which was slated by inspectors two years ago has transformed its fortunes to earn a “Good” rating.

Ofsted inspectors were impressed during a recent visit to Ormskirk West End Primary School and singled out the quality of teaching and student support for praise.

In 2017, the school was ordered to improve in all areas assessed by inspectors, with criticism aimed at areas including leadership, teaching staff and attendance.

But a dramatic turnaround, including several staff changes, means the school is now rated “Good” in all areas.

After the findings of the latest inspection, which took place in June, were published, headteacher Phil Clarke praised governors and parents, as well as those working in the school.

Mr Clarke said: “We have faced our challenges together.

“A united front of governors, parents, teachers and support staff have been determined to deliver the highest standards possible.”

Mr Clarke was also singled out for praise, with the inspectors reporting: “Strong leadership by the headteacher has provided a clear direction and driven improvement during a period of instability in staffing.

“His determined actions have improved the quality of teaching.”

The school, which had 95 pupils at the time of the inspection, was also praised for improvements made to the way it supports disadavantaged pupils and those with special education needs, as well as for improving attendance and behaviour. The report states: “Senior leaders know the school well.

“They have an accurate understanding of where Ormskirk West End Primary is on its improvement journey.

“Senior leaders’ implementation of consistent systems and procedures mean that teachers are more aware of what is expected of them and what they need to do to reach leaders’ ambitious goals.”

It continues: “The behaviour good.

“Pupils are attentive in class and learning is rarely disrupted by poor behaviour. Pupils conduct themselves sensibly around the school.

“They are welcoming to visitors and are polite and of pupils is friendly to adults and to each other.” Mr Clarke added: “The staff and governors of Ormskirk West End Primary will always strive to achieve for the very best academic, social and moral outcomes for all of our wonderful children.”
