New ADHD service on offer to help families
CHILDREN in West Lancashire are to benefit from a new ADHD service in West Lancashire.
The new service has been commissioned by NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and will be provided by ADHD North West, starting this September.
The service will offer a whole family approach and focus on providing information, support and advice to the parents / guardians of children affected by ADHD and its associated conditions. This free service for families will include:
ADHD North West’s eight-week specialist ADHD Parent Empowerment & Skills Training programme. (For parents of children between six and 12 years).
1:1 appointments.
Family outreach support (ie home visits). Liaison with schools. Barbara Worrall, chair at ADHD North West, said: “This new service will work with parents and guardians, as well as schools, to offer a joinedup programme of care in respect of children living with ADHD to ensure that measures and support are in place for their specific needs.
“Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neuro-developmental disorder that includes symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
“Symptoms of ADHD tend to be recognised at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child’s circumstances change, such as when they start school.”
Phil Winnard, mental health commissioning manager at NHS West Lancashire CCG, said: “In West Lancashire there are more than 450 children who live with ADHD and nationally around 5%of the nation’s children have ADHD.
“It is important that we work with organisations like ADHD North West to ensure that we can offer this level of support to children and families affected by ADHD and we are very much looking forward to seeing how the service develops. “ADHD North West have an excellent reputation and they will enhance the services already provided in West Lancashire.”
West Lancashire CCG are currently reviewing and developing our services for children and adults with neuro-developmental disorders and this service is the first of many initiatives that they want to develop over the coming months.
Referrals can be made by any professional, or parents can self-refer.
