M-way work to help cut crash risk
PARTS of the M58 near Junction 3 will be resurfaced months after a man and a four-year-old boy were injured in a crash.
Highways England has confirmed it will resurface sections of the eastbound carriageway near Bickerstaffe within the current financial year.
The work will “ensure the cross fall on the carriageway is reinstated” as necessary to minimise the potential for standing water in the future.
It comes after the man and boy were injured when their Volkswagen
Golf veered off the motorway and hit a tree.
The crash, which involved no other vehicles, happened at 12.20pm on Saturday, June 8.
The driver, a man in his 30s from Up Holland, suffered serious injuries to his head, chest and an arm and was taken to Aintree Hospital.
The boy, who was a passenger in the front of the car, received a minor injury to his head.
He was taken to Alder Hey hospital but later discharged.
After the incident, the motorway was closed for several hours between junctions one and three while police carried out investigation work.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said: “I have reported stretches of the M58 to Highways England on numerous occasions and I am pleased they have confirmed they will be taking action soon to improve the surface and minimise standing water on the road.
“The latest accident occurred this summer, so any improvements to the safety for drivers can not come quick enough as far as I am concerned.
“The divisional director at Highways England has confirmed these works are to take place, and I’m sure this will give motorists more confidence using this motorway in wet weather.”
