Cricketers aims to bowl MPs over in best pub poll
THE Cricketers in Ormskirk has been nominated for a prestigious Parliamentary Pub of the Year award.
The nation’s 650 MPs have the opportunity to nominate a pub for the title and the pub in Chapel Street came out local favourite after a public vote on the website of West Lancashire Labour MP Rosie Cooper.
The main criterion for nomination is that the pubs should be great at what they do.
This can include the range of beer or food provided, the dedication to serving the local community or a specialism in music or sports.
Nominated pubs then submit a video to the judges in order to win.
Ms Cooper said: “Following a public vote via my website, The Cricketers came out on top to be my West Lancashire nomination for the Parliamentary Pub of the Year awards.
“I am pleased to nominate them based on their range of beers and ales, good food, including quality British pub grub, their contribution to the local community and holding various events throughout the year.
“I now look forward to seeing the video they will put together to showcase the establishment and hopefully come out on top in the national awards later this year.”
David Speak has recently gone from manager to owner after buying the pub from his uncle.
He said: “I’m really pleased with the nomination and it’s just great because it’s been a public vote.
“We’re on the edge of town and we put a lot of effort into the community.
“We host a local business group and get involved in events such as the Ormskirk Food and Wine Festival, the food and gin festivals and we get involved the Moor Street Market. We try to use local beers and produce too.
“It’s just nice because it means we’re being recognised for that effort and means we’re doing something right.”
The Cricketers won Camra Pub of the Year in 2015 and underwent a refurbishment, featuring memorabilia around the walls which provide fascinating glimpses into the history of the town, the county and, of course, their cricket clubs.
