Can deal lie ahead

corner. The missed conversion put the visitors’ noses just in front at 7-8.

Aldwinians started the second half in similar fashion, driving the ball at the home defensive line, their play not looking as if they were a man down.

Ormskirk gradually began to assert themselves and a sustained period of pressure pushed the play into the opposition 22.

Gaps began to appear as they picked and drove from the ruck and the ball was moved wide to exploit them.

Unfortunately, one pass was tipped on too losely and fell directly into the hands of the Aldwinians left wing who scampered 75 metres to score unopposed under the posts.

The simple conversion increased their lead to 7-15.

Ormskirk are not known for giving up and soon began to come back strongly.

Good runs on two occasions from second row Aaron Ferry, turned the Aldwinians defensive line and created space behind.

The second resulted in the recycled ball coming to centre Jake Hodson who took the ball on to the five metre line.

The ball was once again recycled cleanly and seeing space out wide, flyhalf Kieron Beswick exploited it with a finely placed kick for winger Liam Webb to dot the ball down in the corner.

At 12-15 Ormskirk were in the hunt for the win, the loss of their back row was eventually beginning to tell on the visitors’ defensive qualities and Ormskirk began to exploit the gaps.

A kick ahead from midfield was kicked on by full back Matty White but the final bounce of the ball eluded him as the try line beckoned.

Late on a final chance came Ormskirk’s way as they stretched the Aldwinians defensive line out wide only for the last pass to go behind the supporting player and into touch, again with the try line in touching distance.

Disappointing not to achieve the win but plenty of positives, especially the knowledge that Ormskirk have the quality and skill to live with the other teams in this league.

There is a free week next Saturday giving the players the opportunity to support England in the World Cup final.

Ormskirk’s next league game is at Wigan on Saturday, November 9.
