Team and specialists get students’ vote
LANCASHIRE & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust’s Medical Education Team has been named the second best teaching placement by medical students from Manchester University.
As part of their studies, fourth year students at Manchester University’s Medical School each year spend four week placements at various NHS providers in the North West.
The students undergo placements in 13 health-related specialties that include psychiatry, GP, orthopaedics, dermatology, ophthalmology, neurology, children’s health, women’s health, infectious diseases, oncology, breast, Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) and old age.
To provide students with experience in mental health, placements in psychiatry are provided by Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust – which overlooks many of the health services provided in West Lancashire and the Sefton coast.
Having attended 13 different placements at various NHS providers this year, students from Manchester University voted the Trust second place for Best Teaching Placement in Year 4.
This is the first time that the Trust has come second, having only reached third place last year in 2018.
Stephanie Glenhomes, administrator with the medical education team, was awarded joint third place for Best Non-Clinical Staff Member involved in Undergraduate Medical Education, Dr Simon Belderbos, the Trust’s undergraduate lead, was voted second place for Best Themed Case Discussion Facilitator in Year 4 and Dr Emily Kaye, specialist trainee doctor, was voted second place for Best Consolidation/Student-Led Revision Session.
Kate Cookson, medical education facilitator at Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, said of the successes: “This is a fantastic achievement and really shows what great work we’re doing at Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust to invest in the future by providing medical students with excellent placements.
‘‘The Trust’s Medical Education Team would like to acknowledge and thank all the staff in the clinical areas that the medical students attend for their valuable input into the student’s teaching, which is key in delivering an award-winning undergraduate programme.”
The annual Undergraduate Teaching Awards were organised by Lancashire Teaching Hospital and held on October 1 at Royal Preston Hospital Education Centre.
