Change provides boost for Linnets

- BY SAM CARROLL

NICK Matthews credited a change of formation and personnel with inspiring Burscough to victory against Whitchurch Alport on Saturday.

Linnets pushed three points clear of the relegation zone following goals from Nathan Martland and George Lomax.

Burscough had lost their previous four matches and Matthews highlighted the performance of Adam Dixon, who created the goal for former Widnes star Lomax.

“The lads had worked hard in training,” the former Widnes coach said.

“We decided to change our formation and by doing so it meant changing personnel. We got off to a great start by scoring in the first minute via a penalty.

“We played some good football at times but had to also be a bit cautious as Alport looked good on the counter-attack. Alport had a 15-minute spell in the second-half but the defence stood firm.

“George Lomax scored the first of hopefully many in a Burscough shirt and it came after a brilliant run from Adam Dixon, who on the day was superb. He covered every blade of grass on Victoria Park.

“We’re happy to get the points and a clean sheet but we’re not getting carried away with things and we will take each game as they come.”

Burscough now face a busy spell of four matches in ten days before the New Year.

Bootle visit Victoria Park on Saturday before a trip to Skelmersdale Town on Boxing Day. Linnets then host Hanley Town two days later and begin their New Year fixture list with a trip to Ashton Athletic.
