The influence of Daryn’s brewing
EDGE Hill University PhD student Daryn Egan-Simon is named among the top 10 most influential people of 2019 for his grassroots organisation BrewEd – announced by Tes.
The 38 year-old set up the education experience for teachers to come together and learn about the profession in an unusual setting together with Ed Finch, a primary school teacher in Oxford.
He said: “For me, it was about creating a space for educators from all phases and sectors to come together to discuss or debate issues and ideas around education.
“We chose the pub as it feels less formal and more intimate.
“BrewEd is a grassroots movement in the truest sense of the word; it is for educators, organised by educators and attended by educators.
“Anyone, anywhere can organise their own BrewEd event.
“There are no keynote speakers as such.
“Presentations are great but it is conversation that brings us together.”
This innovative work has put him in the top 10 influencers on the list released by Tes (formerly known as the Times Educational Supplement), an education business supporting teachers, school staff and schools to succeed in every aspect of their teaching life.
The now senior Education lecturer at the University of Chester is now working to submit his PhD.
Daryn’s PhD is centred around social justice-orientated citizenship education – a subject which he feels passionate about and works to influence the education agenda.
To people who want to get involved in teaching, Daryn said: “Do it… yes, teaching can be challenging at times, but it is also really rewarding as you have the opportunity to share your passion for your subject, ignite imaginations and shape young lives.
“It’s also a social justice issue for me as children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, need the very best teachers in the classroom to inspire them and help them be the very best they can be.”
