Sisters are picking it (litter!) for themselves

- BY CATHERINE MACKINLAY

TWO schoolgirls from Burscough volunteered to go out litter picking after being sick of seeing so much rubbish on their school run.

Sisters Emelia, seven, and Grace Hulme, 11, from Burscough Bridge St John’s Church of England Primary School set out on a windy Sunday afternoon, armed with litter pickers and bin bags.

Together with their mum, Thea Jayne Hulme, 34, they set about cleaning up Warpers Moss Lane from the School Lane end all the way down to the fisheries.

Thea Jayne is a cleaner from Burscough, mum to four daughters, and is married to husband Mike.

She said: “I’m very proud of these two for doing such a fab job. We were sick of seeing it in such a state every time we walked the school run so decided to do something about it.”

They managed to fill two bin bags in 45 minutes with a large amount being empty gin and vodka bottles thrown on the grass verge.

The three volunteered a few months ago with the Burscough Litter Pickers group to clear up Crabtree Lane.

Formed two years ago, the group of Burscough residents volunteer regularly to keep the streets of Burscough clear of rubbish.

Thea Jayne said: “It’s just a really nice experience when you do something like litter picking. You get to meet new people, have a chat and it’s nice to get out.

“On Sunday it was just a really nice family activity too and people were stopping and thanking the girls. Everyone I’ve told is really proud of them.

“They’ve told their friends in school and their teachers and hopefully it will encourage more young people to do the same and to be more aware of litter.

“The litter pickers themselves aren’t much to buy at all and we will be out again soon to do more areas.

“I said to the girls when we were doing it that next time we’re on the school run, it’s going to be nice to think when it’s nice and tidy that we did that.”

The Burscough Litter Pickers Group is trying to raise money to get more equipment to help keep Burscough’s streets clean.
