Heading back to Burscough

Hopes that club could re-sign two former players

- BY SAM CARROLL

BURSCOUGH are hopeful of resigning Kevin Pollard and Luke Gibson this week. Former Widnes midfielder Pollard enjoyed a short spell at Victoria Park last season under former manager Terry Green while Gibson departed in the summer.

The centre-back went on to join Barnoldswick Town while Pollard signed for Northwich Victoria before announcing his departure on social media earlier in January.

Manager Nick Matthews, who has been tasked with an almost complete rebuild since replacing Green, is hoping to continue adding to the ranks.

Burscough are in serious danger of relegation as they sit level on points with bottom club Litherland REMYCA. They remain outside of the drop-zone on goal difference.

Matthews has lost forward George Lomax for what is expected to be the rest of the campaign after he suffered a broken fibula in the recent trip to Ashton Athletic.

Centre-back Gibson could replace defender Ben Lightfoot, who departed alongside his father and club goalkeeping coach John Lightfoot earlier this season.

Pollard, meanwhile, arrives alongside Dale Korie-Butler and Joel Douglas, with the forwards signed from Ashton Athletic and Skelmersdale United receptively last week.

Korie-Butler joined as the jointfourth highest scorer in the NWCFL Premier Division with 14 goals and netted on his debut against his former club last time out.

It has also been learned that Burscough expect to lose midfielder Connor Ready in February.

Former Widnes star Ready has been handed a lucrative deal in New Zealand.

“He’s got a really good offer to go and play football in New Zealand, Connor, where he’s been offered to go over and play football plus a job,” Matthews explained.

“He’ll be getting a paid job and his football so he’s happy with that. That’s where we’re at there.”
