We must clear up town litter spots

- BY CATHERINE MacKINLAY

TWO prominent Ormskirk town centre businesses have been criticised for not taking action over their littered premises.

Our West Lancashire councillor Kate Mitchell spoke out about the problem at NatWest Bank, in Moor Street, and Morrisons supermarket, in Park Road.

Despite Cllr Mitchell bringing the mess to the their attention, the problem persists.

She said: “At NatWest, when I was involved in litter picking the area around the bank premises last year, myself and another resident spoke with the manager. He assured us he would keep on top of the issue. Yet the problem is as bad as ever.”

The Knowsley Ward councillor noticed further litter at the premises more than a week ago and brought it to the attention of the bank immediately.

But nothing has been done since to clear it.

Similarly, at Morrisons, she raised the issue with management, but still nothing has been done about it.

Cllr Mitchell said: “At Morrisons during the community litter pick two Sundays ago, we spotted a fly-tip in the hedge in the corner of the supermarket’s car park. We reported it to store management on the day, but almost a fortnight later and it hasn’t been dealt with.”

The councillor organised a litter-picking event at the beginning of the month which involved community volunteers and members of Edge Hill University’s Sustainability Society to clear up Ormskirk town centre, including alleys, areas behind shops and near the stations.

She added: “Businesses are often critical of the council and its efforts, but they, too, need to play their part in making Ormskirk a place where people want to shop and spend money.”
