Ex-Toffee joins as goalkeeper coach
BURSCOUGH have appointed 23-year-old former Everton prospect Connor Hunt as their new goalkeeping coach.
Hunt joined Everton from Blackpool in August 2014 after previously spending time in the Seasiders’ youth ranks.
He spent three seasons with the Blues before being released and has since made the decision to retire from
The shot-stopper has now taken a position on Nick Matthews’ coaching staff working with regular number one David Jones.
“I met Connor [Hunt] at Conor Ready’s leaving party,” Matthews explained, referencing the Burscough midfielder who left to continue his career in New Zealand this season.
“Ready was at Blackpool with Connor and Everton signed him. He’s actually retired from there. 23-yearsold football altogether. and he’s retired.
“He got an injury at Everton and it was one of them, coming from the professional game. I asked him if he’s ever thought about coaching and I told him there was the option to come down to Burscough if he wanted to.
“Then he asked me if he could take my up on the offer and has come down and worked with Davey.
“I’ve said to Davey if you can’t learn from someone who has been at a Premier League club then you’re never going to. So that’s another good signing we’ve made.”
Matthews also believes Jones could operate at a higher level than the NWCFL Premier Division but for his size.
“If we he was 6”1 he wouldn’t be at Burscough,” he added. “He just wouldn’t. He would be at Southport or something like that. He’s that good.
“He’s probably the smallest goalkeeper in the league but his shot-stopping is outstanding. I worked with him on his kicking, one-to-one coaching and his kicking has improve”.
