Must never be released’

“We would also like to thank the judge, and also with his persistence in seeing the trial through at this very difficult time due to the coronavirus.”

The virus had a significant impact on the logistics of the trial, but those involved were able to complete it despite those concerns.

When Healless was sentenced on Tuesday, his was the only case taking place in Preston Crown Court.

Judge Brown said Alex was “a kind-hearted, gentle and hardworking young man who would never have harmed anyone,” after reading victim impact statements from the Skelmersdale teen’s mum and brother.

The 18-year-old’s disappearance had sparked a missing persons appeal at the end of April last year.

His body was found buried under branches on Parbold Hill on May 1.

This prompted a host of touching tributes to the Home Bargains worker, who had just achieved a promotion.

He also did voluntary work for charity.

Alex’s family and friends were praised by the judge for the dignity they displayed in court throughout the trial.

Following Healless’s sentencing, Det Insp Tracey McMurdo said: “Alex was a young man known for being friendly, open and trusting and at the age of 18 he had his whole life ahead of him.

“His family have been left utterly devastated by his death and they must be praised for conducting themselves with nothing but dignity throughout this investigation and trial. I hope now this process is over they can begin to deal with their grief privately.

“It is no exaggeration to say this has been one of the most harrowing cases myself and my colleagues have ever dealt with. The scene that confronted officers at Parbold Hill last May was shocking, and the professionalism and dedication shown by every single officer in the investigation team cannot be understated. They worked tirelessly to identify Healless as Alex’s killer.

“This crime happened in a small close knit community and I would also like to thank the people of Parbold for their help and patience during this investigation.

“I would also like to thank the hundreds of people who responded to our appeal for information and CCTV. Their help was invaluable in piecing together what happened to Alex.”
