Hospitals death toll passes 100 at weekend

-

THE total number of coronavirus-related deaths at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals moved into triple figures over the weekend.

While the death toll around the country appears to be declining from a peak of more than 800 per day, Wednesday, April 22 was the deadliest day at our hospitals with nine fatalities recorded.

According to figures released daily by NHS England, a total of 110 patients diagnosed with Covid-19 have died at

Southport since March 25.

The data does not explicitly state how many patients have died at each hospital, with figures recorded by trust instead. However, wards for Covid-19 patients have been created at Southport rather than Ormskirk, meaning that most, if not all, will have taken place at the former.

The toll includes the death of nurse Josephine Peter, who had been working at Southport Hospital on a temporary basis since February.

A North-West Ambulance Service paramedic has also been killed by the virus, while other staff from Southport Hospital have required treatment after contracting Covid-19.

The actual number of people to have died in the area covered by the trust, which covers West

Lancashire and Southport-Formby, is likely to be significantly greater as the numbers released by NHS England only included deaths reported by hospitals.

Some experts fear that the actual total, including those who died at home or in care homes, could be as much as double.
