Students volunteer to help NHS in virus crisis
MORE than 750 Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) and Paramedic Practice students at Edge Hill University have volunteered to work in the NHS during the current crisis.
These selfless students are now helping the NHS to save lives in hospitals across the North West and beyond.
Louise Bailey, a third-year student studying nursing and social work has opted in to support the NHS and take an extended placement.
She said: “The experience and wisdom of working in a pandemic will be so valuable.
“I am proud not only to support the NHS but also of the determination and resilience being shown by all student nurses at this unprecedented time.”
Edge Hill staff have been working around the clock to support students to volunteer with the NHS.
Dean of the University’s Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine (FHSCM), Seth Crofts, said: “I am so proud of our health students, they have come forward to support the NHS, without hesitation and displayed the utmost compassion.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has brought out the best in so many people. Our students demonstrate the essence of nursing and health care at its best.” Edge Hill is also releasing, on full pay, any professionally-qualified member of staff who wishes to temporarily rejoin the NHS workforce.
Colleagues from across the University have opted to support the NHS in both clinical and nonclinical roles.
Vice-Chancellor Dr John Cater said: “This is a tremendous display of commitment, and we are extremely grateful to all the students and staff that have volunteered.
“I and my colleagues are proud of you.
“Equally, I am grateful for FHSCM staff who have facilitated and managed a process involving hundreds of individuals making decisions to support our fantastic NHS and all in a matter of days.
“Thank you to each and every one of you.”
