Restrictions eased at waste sites
VANS and trailers will again be allowed to visit Burscough and Skelmersdale’s recycling and waste centres from tomorrow (July 10).
The change comes as Lancashire County Council partially lifts restrictions put in place when the centres reopened in May.
In another change introduced earlier this week, those in cars no longer need to book appointments, though anyone using a van or a trailer is required to do so.
Other restrictions, including only being allowed to take one type of rubbish and bans on construction waste, remain in place and staff are still not allowed to help visitors carry their items to skips.
The county council introduced its booking system to avoid large queues which left people waiting up to two hours to visit waste centres in areas including Southport and Liverpool and says demand for appointments has now reduced to a level where restrictions can start to be lifted.
County Cllr Albert Atkinson, cabinet member for technical services, rural affairs and waste management, said: “I’m glad that we’re able to lift some of the restrictions on how people can use our recycling centres.
“The appointment system has been very effective in ensuring people can bring their waste without having to join a long queue, and ensure our staff can direct them once they arrive while ensuring their experience of visiting is safe and stress-free.
“Managing demand was vital when we first reopened the sites as we knew that a lot of people had excess waste they wanted to dispose of which had built up while the sites were closed.”
