- BY JOHN DRISCOLL

SKELMERSDALE United boss Paul McNally has hailed the signing of forward Danny Mitchley after his departure from NPL side Radcliffe FC.

Mitchley returns to the club for a third spell and the boss hopes his experience at a higher level will be a good boost in the coming season.

He began his playing career with United in 2002 progressing in the youth setup up to the age of 15 when he moved onto the

Latics’ of Oldham and Wigan. A move to Blackpool saw him excel with a potential step-up to the senior squad halted by a seasonending injury. He made his professional debut the follwing season as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace but would soon spend time at Southport, Burscough, Wrexham on loan.

A move to Mansfield Town followed in 2010 and spent two seasons with The Stags including a loan spell with Nuneaton Town. Mitchley moved on to Altrincham and during his time there went on loan to Marine and Kendal Town before joining the Mintcakes officially and scoring 26 times in 36 appearances.

Mitchley rejoined United from

Kendal in the summer of 2014 and his debut season yielded a total of 25 goals in 43 appearances including two hat-tricks and three braces.

He opened his account on his third appearance away at Whitby Town and went onto score nine in 15 games the following season before moving on to then NPL rivals Marine in October 2015 for a second spell at the Mariners leaving United with 34 goals in 58 appearances.

At Marine, he scored 81 times in 178 appearances over four seasons at the Marine Travel Arena including a few in the M58 Derbies between United and Marine before departing in the summer of 2019 to Radcliffe where he made 10 appearances across the season while also playing 10 times on loan at Witton Albion.

United manager Paul McNally commented: “I am delighted to have Danny on board as it is a massive coup at our level to have a player of his ability.”

Danny commented “I am delighted to be back at the club where I began my career and I hope we can have a great season.”
