Cameras set to be installed at accident blackspot

- BY JAMIE LOPEZ

RED light and speed cameras are set to be installed at the dangerous Fiveways junction this autumn.

The cameras are part of efforts to reduce the number of crashes at the notorious Ormskirk spot and will be aided by a separate plan to add new road markings and signs.

Local politicians and residents have long campaigned for safety measures to be increased along County Road to reduce the number of accidents. The speed limit was reduced from 40mph to 30mph in 2019 but crashes have continued to occur and calls for change have continued.

Lancashire County Council have plans to improve signage at the site, while police want to install cameras which have the dual purpose of recording those who drive through red lights and checking the speed of those travelling through green.

Home Office approval is currently needed for the cameras to be installed and is hoped to be approved in the

Autumn.

West Lancashire MP has lobbied for improvements along the road and the MP said she will continue to push for changes. She said: “Safety at the Fiveways Junction has been a major concern for my West Lancashire constituents for many, many years and sadly there have been too many accidents at junctions on County Road causing injuries and deaths.

“I have long called for Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Constabulary to take effective action to reduce the possibility of accidents occurring at this busy and complicated junction, now it seems with the Home Office on board we are finally breaking through.

“The Policing Minister has confirmed to me that the process is ongoing to approve the Vector SR spot red-light enforcement device, which already had speed enforcement approval, and expects to have approval in the autumn.

“LCC have previously told me that they are in the process of identifying changes to road markings and signing to assist with manoeuvres through the junction and to back-up the changed speed limit on the A59. This work will also take place in the autumn.”
