Mum died after falling on bag of alcohol in street

AMUCH-LOVED mum died after a sudden fall in the street near her home, an inquest hearing was told.

Susan Woods was walking back home with a bag containing a bottle of wine and some cider which had been bought from an off-licence.

The 45-year-old fell heavily on Moorland Road, Maghull, at 8.50pm, on Saturday, August 15, coroner’s officer James Martindale said at the opening of her inquest before Sefton Coroner’s Court.

He added: “She could be seen (on CCTV) getting up and moving out of view.

“CCTV showed that she had fallen onto her bag and fluids can be seen leaking out, indicating that the wine bottle or the can had broken at that stage.

“At 9pm, she was found by residents, collapsed and alone, a short distance along the road. She was bleeding heavily from a catastrophic neck injury with the wine bottle smashed and broken directly under her neck.

“At 9.02pm, witnesses were with

Mrs Woods and were calling for an ambulance. Paramedics arrived at the scene and performed CPR.

“Susan was taken to Aintree Hospital where she was sadly pronounced deceased at 10.10pm by a doctor.”

Before she fell, Mrs Woods and her husband had been socialising with friends and returned to Maghull in a taxi at 8.40pm.

Mr Martindale said they were in “good spirits” and there was “no conflict between them.”

Bootle Town Hall was told how CCTV confirmed the purchases of alcohol at an off-licence before the couple began to walk home.

Mr Woods visited a cashpoint to get money for a pre-ordered takeaway and his wife started to walk home as he did that, Mr Martindale added.

She fell only a short distance from the street where she lived and her death initially prompted a huge police presence at the scene on Moorland Road.

Coroner Julie Goulding heard how Merseyside Police launched an investigation following the tragedy, but had since confirmed that there was no third-party involvement.

The results of a post mortem examination are yet to be disclosed as the results of toxicology tests are being awaited.

The inquest was adjourned as Ms Goulding asked the coroner’s officer: “Can you please give my sincere condolences to Susan’s husband and the family.”
