Five released pending further inquiry in bribery probe
FOUR men and a woman who were arrested in relation to a bribery and corruption investigation have been released from custody.
A senior Liverpool council officer and two well known businessmen were among those arrested on Thursday.
During the activity police arrested a man 51, and woman, 45, both from the Cressington area, a 56-year-old man from Knowsley, a 34-year-old man from Downholland in Lancashire and a 41-year-old man from Mawdsley, Lancashire.
Last Thursday at around 5pm police said all five had been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
It is understood the arrests were partly connected to a police investigation into a proposed training academy in the Kirkdale area of Liverpool.
Earlier this year our sister paper the Liverpool ECHO revealed how the academy, which involved large sums of money, was not built.
In a statement yesterday police said the five arrests were linked to a bribery and corruption investigation.
On Thursday Liverpool council released a statement in response to the arrest of one of the authority’s officers.
A spokesperson said: “Liverpool City Council is co-operating with Merseyside Police in relation to its ongoing investigation. We do not comment on matters relating to individual members of staff.”
