“The leadership team and I contacted each member of staff and each child’s parents/carers last night to avoid the anxiety that might be created in turning away children this morning and to break any possible chain of transmission in taxis.
“This action was overwhelmingly positively received and I am very grateful to my team for doing this with me on a Sunday night. My thanks go to these parents for their support and co-operation.
“We will be writing to you in the next few days with an agreed date of return for each group, as they differ slightly.
“The action will inevitably cause some minor disruption to other classes as a small number of specialist subject teachers, who teach across the year groups, have had to self-isolate for 14 days from contact.
“There may be some delay in communication with family liaison officers/deputy headteachers in getting back to you, whilst they are engaged in the follow-up work that has to be done over the next few days following this action.
“We have done very well compared to a number of other schools and work settings and after eight months, these are our first cases of staff contracting the virus.
“I know you will wish them all well and will support the actions I have taken to reduce as much as possible any further transmission. We continue to risk assess and take all the actions we reasonably can, whilst keeping the school open.”
The Ormskirk school is one of many schools across the county to be forced to send pupils home following positive Covid cases. At least 37 different education sites have reported contact with the virus just weeks after most children returned to class.
