Proposal to knock down and rebuild school wins approval

- BY BENJAMIN ROBERTSHASLAM

PLANS to knock down and rebuild a busy high school in Merseyside have been approved.

The plans submitted for Deyes High School in Maghull proposed knocking down the high school buildings and replacing them with all new “net zero carbon” buildings. The plans will see the current sixth form building remaining whilst the rest of the school is rebuilt with the erection of a twostorey and a three-storey building.

In the planning statement submitted to Sefton Council, it said: “Development of a ‘net zero carbon in operation’ eight-form entry Secondary School for 1,200 pupils to replace the current Deyes High School buildings except for the sixth form, for 300 pupils, which will be retained.

“Development comprises the demolition of the existing school buildings, excluding the Sixth Form, and the erection of a two and three-story new building with associated indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a partcovered six-court multi-use games area (MUGA), external canopies, an energy centre and service compound, covered cycle parking, motorcycle and car parking, alterations to the site access, hard and soft landscaping, fencing, boundary treatments and signage, together with the formation of temporary access from Deyes Lane for construction purposes and the provision of contractor facilities and associated works required during construction.”

The report reveals, pupils and teachers will be kept in the current buildings whilst the new school is built alongside.

Once pupils and teachers have moved into the new school, the next phase of construction will begin with the old buildings demolished.

The transformational plans have been approved with conditions outlining times and approval notices throughout the process of ripping down the buildings and replacing them.

In the approval report written by Catherine Lewis, it said: “The proposal complies with adopted local plan policy and, subject to conditions to control various aspects and in the absence of any other material considerations, the application is recommended for approval.”
