Mayhem after yob smashed mum’s telly

She chased son out after he flipped

- Ron Moore

A raging yob who smashed up his mum’s telly got more than he bargained for when she chased him out of the house.

Angry James McLellan, 38, flipped out at his 64-year-old mother and took it out on her TV set at the house in Muirpark Avenue, Renfrew, last June.

However, Paisley Sheriff Court heard the jobless lout got a fright when the feisty pensioner, who was lying down with a cast on her arm, got up and hounded him out of the property.

The accused later suffered a fit of remorse and phoned the cops where he confessed to the crime of breaking her TV and was promptly arrested.

Fiscal depute John Penman said: “The accused was visiting his mother. “He became somewhat agitated with his mother as she was resting on the bed and took it out on her TV set.

“He vandalised her TV set and, to be fair to his mother who had a plaster cast on her arm, she got up and set about her son, chasing him out of the house.

“Later that morning he contacted police and surrendered himself in respect of the matter.”

The court was told McLellan, landed in hot water again, this time at Ferguslie Park Avenue in Paisley, where he was caught stealing a woman’s garden hoe, last July.

The fiscal added: “The complainer observed the accused walking down the road carrying the hoe over his shoulder, however, there was full recovery in this case.”

He again was arrested by cops and told he was being reported over the matter.

McLellan appeared from custody at court this week where he pleaded guilty to the offences of vandalising his mother’s TV and the theft of the garden tool, as well as a number of breaches of bail.

Defence agent Peter Galletly said: “He is someone who has suffered alcohol and drug abuse problems over a long period, and while his record is lengthy, they are for minor offences.”

The lawyer added his client had pleaded guilty and already spent time on custody for failing to appear at a court hearing last month.

However, the accused has been making a new start with a girlfriend with whom he is hoping to start a family.

Sheriff David Pender said: “This was a silly offence.

“But since you have a relationship you will be given an opportunity.”

Sentenced was deferred and he was released on bail until April when he will learn of his fate.
