Youngsters make the grade at competition Medal haul for Ren96

- Craig Ritchie

Young swimmers from Ren96 are riding the wave of success following another successful showing at a recent graded meet.

The swimmers, led by coach Andy Jackson, produced some eye-catching displays as they came up against a number of the country’s top clubs.

Jonny Sprot produced a tremendous display of courage against swimmers from 24 clubs.

The competition just to qualify for the graded meet was fierce and the odds were always stacked against the Renfrewshire club’s top young hopefuls.

But this did not deter the swimmers from putting on a good show in front of a packed crowd.

Youngsters scooped 13 gold medals, 15 silvers and nine bronzes, and there were an incredible 106 top 10 places taken by the squad.

Top performer from the boys was Jude Ralston, with four places, and for the girls it was Erin Harwood, with two firsts and a second spot.

And the success was extended to club officials, with Ren96 also honoured with the presentation of a SwiMark+ accreditation from Paul Donald, the West Regional Swimming Development Manager.

The award was accepted on behalf of the club by club chairman Leigh Walker, assistant head coach Andy Jackson and the club’s longest serving swimmer Connie Mackay.

The committee has been working hard for the accreditation that will elevate the club’s profile within Scottish swimming.

Donald stayed for a short time to observe the meet and expressed his satisfaction in the way that the club do things.

He was impressed with the commitment from the club’s volunteers and coaching staff, and stated that Ren96 is a club heading in the right direction.
