A TASTE OF HOME
School celebrates diversity
Students broadened their horizons as they sampled a taste of a different culture.
Kids at Paisley Grammar were cooking up a storm at their multicultural food event.
With one in nine pupils classing English as their second language, the school celebrated it’s diversity with some international cuisine.
Teachers asked youngsters to share some of their family recipes, bringing in traditional food from their home nation to share with peers.
From African jollof rice and Lebanese dumplings, to Irish stew and halal sausage rolls, a smorgasboard of treats were on offer to sample.
A wide variety of nations were represented on the day, with Scottish, Italian, French, Polish, Greek, African, Indian and Pakistani dishes available, to name but a few.
Chemistry teacher Colin Vetters said it had struck him how diverse the school body is and he wanted to organise something to celebrate it.
He said, “The multicultural food event was a great way to celebrate the diverse culture we are lucky enough to have at Paisley Grammar.
“It was a wonderful atmosphere on the day and the kids put in a great effort. They were a credit to the school.”
Local businesses supported the event, with Tesco and Multan Tandoori providing food, and Renfrewshire Council awarding a £100 grant to the event to help with costs.
Funds raised from hosting the food sale went towards Comic Relief.
Mr Vetters said the school will continue to invest in celebrating its diverse culture.
He added: “The next thing planned is to produce a book filled with all of the recipes used on Thursday.
“Pupils will compile it in class and it will be printed and bound.
“The book will then be sold at parents’ evenings, with money raised going to charity and towards funding next year’s multicultural food event.”
