Renfrew home with derby victory

- Yoker Athletic ...1 Renfrew .............3

Craig Ritchie Colin Clark heaped praise on his side after watching them come away with a victory in the Ferry Derby.

Renfrew made the relatively short trip across the Erskine Bridge to Holm Park to face Steph Reilly’s side in the Super League First Division.

An upturn in form since the turn of the year has almost eliminated any fears of relegation for Clark’s side but he rebuffed any assumptions that his team has little to play for in the closing weeks of the season.

Clark told Express Sport: “We can still get relegated. We need 30 to 33 points before we are safe, in my view, so that’s at least another two wins.

“From where we were at the start of the season, the boys have been fantastic. We always believed in them because the quality is there in our squad and we knew that they would turn their form around.

“It was almost a matter of time because we were only losing games by the odd goal here or there.

“We have let ourselves down a couple of times and remaining consistent is key to where we want to be.

“But the boys were great on Saturday. Yoker can be a very tough place to go to, but they stuck to their task well.”

Kieran Healy opened the scoring for Renfrew, following a spell of sustained pressure in the opening exchanges.

Ross Hocknull then doubled the lead before the interval as he rose highest to get on the end of a Healy cross and head home.

The half-time lead was no more than the side deserved as they dictated play against a Yoker side, which is struggling near the foot of the table.

Scrapping for their lives, Reilly’s side came out looking to narrow the deficit in the second period, and they certainly looked more dangerous on the break.

Some slackness in front of goal saw the likes of Scott Morton and Chris Zok spurn a couple of opportunities for Renfrew.

But Zok finally found the back of the net, converting from the penalty spot to put the tie beyond any doubt.

A late penalty for Yoker reduced the deficit, but it was Renfrew who bagged the three points.

Clark added: “We dropped Zok further back, and credit to him, he worked his socks off for the team, chasing back and putting in the graft.

“Scott Morton will feel unlucky not to have scored but, on another day, he could have had a few.”
