We’re winning for gaffer, says loan star Smith

- Craig Ritchie

Rewarding manager Jack Ross is the driving force behind Saints ambitions to stay in the league, according to loanee Cammy Smith.

The attacking midfielder has revelled in his role for the Buddies since joining on a temporary deal from Aberdeen in January. Saints have been given credit for their recent upturn in form that has bolstered their survival hopes in the Championship.

But Smith revealed that the praise must also be directed to boss Ross, with the players doing everything they can to help the gaffer pull off the great escape.

Smith told Express Sport: “I’ve been really impressed by the manager.

“Before I came to the club, I spoke to a few people and they only had very good things to say about him.

“Getting to see how he works first hand has been brilliant and I’m really enjoying working under him.

“I want to give the manager everything I can between now and the end of the season, as do all the boys. But it’s not just him, it’s James Fowler and Allan McManus, the way the coaching staff work is brilliant and the boys have bought into it.”

Smith, who fired his first league goal since joining the club in the weekend’s 6-2 victory over Ayr United, admitted he was delighted with the performance against The Honest Men.

Saints are now within a point of Ian McCall’s side in the league table, albeit with a game in hand.

And due to their situation in the league, the 21-year-old says he would have been happy with any positive scoreline, nevermind the thrashing they dished out.

He added: “It was a good win and the manner of it was really pleasing at this stage of the season.

“The manager spoke to us after the game and said he would have taken a 1-0 in a scrappy game because three points is three points, regardless of how you get it. But, obviously, he was delighted with how we played.

“We have been playing well and looking dangerous but we just hadn’t been taking our chances. We said a few weeks ago that the goals would come and it’s finally came and paid off for us.

“But there are still points to be played for.

“We’ve been brilliant and our performances and points show that, but I think we can’t get carried away.

“The manager has been good and he has kept us level-headed.

“He will tell us to get our heads down again this week to get ready to go again.

“We have dragged a few other teams back into it, but there is still a lot to play for.”
