Award wins top off great weekend

- Kenneth Speirs

A well-known music school took the Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid to one of England’s biggest cities.

The Brian Laurie Academy displayed banners supporting the bid at the UK Accordion Championships in Liverpool.

And a video on the academy’s Facebook page of the Brian Laurie Accordion Showband has already reached 1,800 views.

The competition weekend at the Adelphi Hotel saw a big success for the band, which won first place in all the three categories it entered.

Brian’s students achieved six first places in individual categories and a first place in duets, as well as a first in the advanced group category.

There were also 10 second places in individual categories and one in the intermediate group category.

Individuals also achieved seven third individual places, bringing a grand total of 26 trophies and shields returned to Paisley.

An academy spokesman said: “This was a successful weekend and Brian is really excited for the future of the orchestra, which, having already performed in Germany and the USA, plans to travel abroad again in 2018/19.

“Anyone interested in playing the accordion should contact the academy as this is a great opportunity to participate in an orchestra that is family orientated, accepts all ages from eight years to 80 years and has created so many friendships for life.”
