Lady Lane to get a mural

- Lynn Jolly

The location for Pa i s l ey ’ s nex t fabulous public mural has been revealed – and it will brighten up a section of Lady Lane.

Business regeneration group Paisley First is looking for artists to submit design work for the latest project in the Paisley First walls series.

Following on from the success of recent murals in the town’s Johnston Street and Storie Street, the team is now moving its attention to Lady Lane.

The wall at the side of the Co- op Funeralcare premises is smaller than previous projects, but offers a good-size canvas for future artwork.

The owner of the building is happy to remove the sign which is currently visible on the wall.

Artists interested in getting involved should incorporate a tree with roots, the Paisley pattern and butterflies – all signifying birth and roots and re-birth.

I t has also been suggested that this would be a good location to include a small reference to the famous Slug In A Bottle court case.

Paisley First chairman Ian Henderson said: “This will be a welcome addition to the murals in Johnston Street and Storie Street, which have already attracted visitors from far and wide.

“It’s really important that the benefit of these murals is spread throughout the whole town centre and we hope this will encourage people to take a closer look at all Paisley has to offer.”

There is already a gigantic kingfisher bird mural in Johnston Street and a St Mirren-themed one in Brown’s Lane – both painted by local artist Mark Worst.

And schoolgirl Eva Rose Ross won a competition to be commemorated on the gable wall next to Allan’s Snack Bar on Storie Street in the town.

She can be seen posing in her her sunglasses and giving a peace sign in the colourful creation by local artist Caroline Gormley and co-artist Sandy Guy.

David Eagle, regional operations manager for Co-op Funeralcare, said they are delighted to be involved.

He told us: “We’re incredibly proud that our funeral home has been identified as the next location for a mural.

“Community is at the heart of the Co- op and we hope that the winning entry brings great enjoyment to local residents.”

Initial designs and written concepts should be submitted to Paisley First by 9am on Monday, May 15.

Submissions should also include the artist’s quotation to carry out the project, and this fee should also cover all the materials, equipment and insurance that is required.

These can be handed into the Paisley First office or emailed to ask@ paisleyfirst.com

Artists must either work or live in Paisley, or have prominent links to the town.
