Little sis has made us proud
On Friday we were all at the Lagoon Leisure Centre for the Renfrewshire Council count.
I was an absolute nervous wreck as I waited for my wee sister Jennifer’s result.
Normally I am ok come election night, or day, in this case.
When you are the candidate it is easier to be philosophical about the whole process.
But when it’s another member of your family it’s not quite so easy.
We all left the count and went to a local pub for a wee celebration and it was richly deserved with all the hard work from our SNP activists.
On Saturday, I do believe there may have been some sore heads.
Luckily for me, my father-in-law Tom Thompson had his sensible head on and got me home at a decent time.
But Jennifer worked really hard during the election and she deserves the success.
The result for the SNP in Renfrewshire was spectacular.
We now have 19 councillors and many of them are new to politics. They will provide an energy in the council that has been sadly lacking in the past.
What we can now see emerging in Scottish politics is the fight between the SNP and the Tories, as the Labour Party were all but wiped out in Paisley.
The choice now and in the future is between the progressive SNP, standing up for Scotland and offering a positive vision for our nation, and the Tories and with politics of hate and anger.
I would say that we, as a community, must remain focused on that positive future offered by the SNP.
It is all too easy to focus on the negativity that the Tories offer, but that’s not what politics should be about.
For now, we can be pleased in Paisley as we continue to look to the future brightly and be positive.
So congratulations to all the successful SNP candidates.
Let’s hope they can be part of the administration in Renfrewshire Council and start building that positive future we all want.
Because, should there be a unionist alliance in Renfrewshire House, that would be terrible for us all.
