Trio try to con OAPs out of cash

-

Families have been warned to be vigilant against bogus callers after three ‘workmen’ tried to dupe an older couple into handing over hundreds of pounds.

The crooks appeared at a home in Tylney Road, in the Ralston area of Paisley, on Sunday afternoon, claiming to work for a painting company which was carrying out legitimate work.

It’s thought the bogus callers – described as a man in his 50s and two younger men – had targeted the property after spotting a work van outside the previous day.

They asked the homeowners, who are both in their 60s, to hand over several hundred pounds for more paint.

However, the quickthinking couple called the painting firm before handing over any money and were told that they had no workers in the area.

Paisley Inspector Tracy Harkins said yesterday: “In this incident, no money was lost, but victims of bogus callers aren’t always so fortunate.

“I would ask anyone who spotted a blue Ford Transit van – possibly a 63 plate – in the area and may have information about these three men to contact police in Paisley on 101.”

She added: “I would also ask families in the town to remain vigilant against these types of bogus calls and never hand money over unless they are confident that the work has been carried out by a legitimate contractor.”
