Volunteers wanted to share benefits experiences

-

Volunteers are urgently needed for Social Security Experience Panels .

Paisley Northwest SNP Councillor Kenny MacLaren hopes people living in his ward, and across Renfrewshire, will get involved.

The Scottish Government has made the call for volunteers, and Councillor MacLaren said: “I would encourage anyone who has experience of the social security system to put their name forward for this.

“Using the experience of those who are either receiving benefits, or have done so recently, will enable the Scottish Government to build a fairer system that reflects the concerns of those who apply for benefits.

“If you think you can help, and want to make a difference, then please get in touch with the Scottish Government.”

A social security system is being designed ahead of powers being devolved for more than 11 benefits.

And people with experience of the current system are needed to help design the new one. More than 1500 volunteers have already signed up to participate but more are needed – especially those with experience of the Funeral Expenses Payment.

Registration closes on May 12, and a letter from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says: “We’re doing things differently and shaping a fair social security system built on the knowledge and direct personal experience of those who are using, or have recently used, the current benefits system.

“We want at least 2000 people to join our Social Security Experience Panels – and we want you to help and guide us as on that journey.

“I know many feel the current system is hard to navigate or has treated them badly with people feeling stressed and anxious instead of supported, but we will treat people with dignity and respect.
