MP Mhairi is a hit as she blasts out Caledonia in pub

- Chris Taylor

Mhairi Black strummed a guitar and belted out independence anthem Caledonia on pub karaoke.

The Nat, 22, who was the Paisley and Renfrewshire MP until the UK parliament dissolved last week, took to the stage at Burger and Keg to play a rendition of the Dougie MacLean classic.

Punters filmed the performance and can be heard joining in with the singing and a rendition of Paul Simon hit You Can Call me Al.

The clips start with a reveller shouting the politician’s name to cheers.

Mhairi has refused to rule out an encore as she kicks of her campaign for re-election next month.

She said: “I have to say thanks to Johnny Barr for letting me steal his guitar and mic for a while and thanks to all the punters for keeping the heckling to a minimum.”

The footage has racked up almost 6,000 hits since being posted to YouTube last weekend.

During the run-through of Caledonia, a pal jumps on stage and shares vocal duties, to the delight of revellers.

Viewers on the video sharing site hailed the fun turn.

Shona Davidson signalled a round of applause for the antics. She wrote: “A fun time.” Visitor Adeenreds echoed her thoughts and added: “Class.”

The films taken at the boozer in Paisley’s Gilmour Street have also been posted to social media.

Twitter user @JimmyMccoo joked: “Thank God, she decided to go into politics.”

And Jim Strachan added: “Typical karaoke, pretty bad.”

The gig ends with the parliamentarian whipping her guitar off to a huge ovation before shaking hands with the compere.

In March, a video of Mhairi debating with Tory minister Caroline Nokes went viral after she appeared to mouth “you’re talking s***e, hen.”

Mhairi faces a battle to keep her seat after a snap General Election was called for June 8.

She was studying for a degree in politics when she was voted in as the youngest member of the House of Commons since 1880 after winning two years ago.
