Order of Merit star finishes seventh

- Craig Ritchie

Old Ranfurly golfer Jamie Stewart was top Scot at the Lytham Trophy competition in England at the weekend.

In a tournament brimming with top Great Britain and Northern Ireland prospects, last year’s Boys Order of Merit winner Stewart produced an impressive performance to wind up in overall seventh position.

His score of 15 over par saw him seven shots behind eventual winner Jack Singh-Brar from Remedy Oak. It marks a continuation of Stewart’s impressive start to the new golfing season with the Bridge of Weir golfer finishing among the frontrunners at the Scottish Golf Men’s Order of Merit competition at Crail Golf Society a fortnight ago.

Stewart finished six shots behind eventual winner Connor Syme, who survived a late scare to secure a fivestroke success. The Drumoig golfer, who is currently ranked 10th in the world amateur rankings, headed into the final round in fine form with his overall score sitting at 10 under par.

After the opening 36 holes at Lytham, Jeff Wright from Forres had fired himself into a share of the lead on one-over-par following a stunning 67. Ahead of the final two rounds today, the Scot shared the lead with England’s Singh-Brar.

However, Wright slipped to a share of 16th place, the same mark as Glencruitten’s Robert MacIntyre who had hauled himself into contention after a third-round 70 at the demanding Open Championship venue.

Meanwhile, Liam Johnston from Dumfries & County shared 13th place, while Renfrewshire Golf Union and Kilmacolm Golf Club’s Mattew Clark finished in tied 22nd position.

Elsewhere, the Renfrewshire team of Niamh Kinney, Romy Erskine, Jennifer Linklater, Liz Stewart and Catherine Garrett lifted the Junior Team Trophy at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club following the West of Scotland women’s championship.

Earlier in the day, Cowglen’s Alyson McGinnigle took the title from Emma Hale, with McGinnigle’s better inward nine sealing her the title.

Susan Wood finished the afternoon in third position with a 77.
